EL AGUA MULTIFORME
“El agua toma siempre la forma de los vasos
que la contienen”, dicen las ciencias que mis pasos
atisban y pretenden analizarme en vano;
yo soy la resignada por excelencia, hermano.
¿No ves que a cada instante mi forma se aniquila?
Hoy soy torrente inquieto y ayer fui agua tranquila;
hoy soy, en vaso esférico, redonda; ayer, apenas,
me mostraba cilíndrica en las ánforas plenas,
y así pitagorizo mi ser, hora tras hora;
hielo, corriente, niebla, vapor que el día dora,
todo lo soy, y a todo me pliego en cuanto cabe.
¡Los hombres no lo saben, pero Dios si lo sabe!
¿Por qué tú te rebelas? ¿Por qué tú ánimo agitas?
¡Tonto! ¡Si comprendieras las dichas infinitas
de plegarse a los fines del Señor que nos rige!
¿Qué quieres? ¿Por qué sufres? ¿Qué sueñas? ¿Qué te aflige?
¡Imaginaciones que se extinguen en cuanto
aparecen...! ¡En cambio, yo canto, canto, canto!
Canto, mientras tu penas, la voluntad ignota;
canto cuando soy chorro, canto cuando soy gota,
y al ir, Proteo extraño, de mi destino en pos,
murmuro: —¡Que se cumpla la santa ley de Dios!
¿Por qué tantos anhelos sin rumbo tu alma fragua?
¿Pretendes ser dichoso? Pues bien: sé como el agua;
sé como el agua, llena de oblación y heroísmo,
sangre en el cáliz, gracia de Dios en el bautismo;
sé como el agua, dócil a la ley infinita,
que reza en las iglesias en donde está bendita,
y en el estanque arrulla meciendo la piragua.
¿Pretendes ser dichoso? Pues bien: sé como el agua;
lleva cantando el traje de que el Señor te viste,
y no estés triste nunca, que es pecado estar triste.
Deja que en ti se cumplan los fines de la vida:
sé declive, no roca; transfórmate y anida
donde al Señor le plazca, y al ir del fin en pos,
murmura: ¡Que se cumpla la santa ley de Dios!
Lograrás, si lo hicieres así, magno tesoro
de bienes: si eres bruma, serás bruma de oro;
si eres nube, la tarde te dará su arrebol;
si eres fuente, en tu seno verás temblando al sol;
tendrán filetes de ámbar tus ondas, si laguna
eres, y si océano, te plateará la luna.
Si eres torrente, espuma tendrás tornasolada,
y una crencha de arco-iris en flor, si eres cascada.
Así me dijo el Agua con místico reproche,
